“The hard driving drums that open Jump Back Jake’s new EP, Call Me Your Man, don’t try to do too much. When the rest of the band jumps in a few bars later, the contours of a small recording studio emerge from the sound. It’s tight, focused, full of momentum. Jump Back starts singing, but the cadence is more relaxed then his older material. I think immediately of Kris Kristofferson when he gets to that line, “I’m sleeping in the next room doll / And all my shirts smell like you”. It’s understatement with an undercurrent, simmering on top of some rock and roll.

Where have all the horns gone? I remember Jake proudly rounding up aging Memphis brass, dragging them out of their retirement kicking and screaming, charming them with grand marnier and an unabashed love for the obscure records they played on decades ago. But the well curated soul sound that powered his first record, Brooklyn Hustle / Memphis Muscle, is over. And frankly I don’t miss it.

That Jake can still be found. The murderous metal riffs on Rose Colored Coffin (track 4) fall right into “I got a Loooovveee,” sung with the tone and melisma of a juke joint regular. But instead of trying to produce a modern soul record, Jump Back is putting those tools to work on compositions that defy easy categorization. There is something of Tom Waits in this track, a spooky gypsy, collecting the odds and ends of American music and stitching them up into an ill fitting suit that scares the women as much as it turns them on.” (continue reading at The Vinyl District…)

There were meteor showers all week – slow burning blue flames in between flashes of heat lightning in the sky above highway 61 between Clarksdale and Memphis. Robert ‘Wolfman” Belfour was playing at Red’s on the corner of Sunflower and MLK. It was a a Wednesday night house party and it was like 2009 and 1959 were the same year.

Then it was a new year and I stayed up late in a guest house on Belvedere writing a new song called ‘King of Romance.’ Now it is our new single. It’s free. Share it with each other. XOXO JBJ

Star & Micey

Below is a video of the guys performing a new song called “Jesus and the Devil,” which they’ll be cutting real soon with Curry Weber and John Hampton.  It’s a real fun song with a folk gospel feel.  Watch Nicky Reds punch Josh in the leg at the end.

And here’s one of them doing a tribute to Alex Chilton by performing “Thirteen” going into one of their unreleased songs, “Gonna Lose My Mind.” This was the first time they played it and ended up changing it up for the Barbarella showcase (if anyone has footage of it, please let me know – jdavis@ardentmusic.com).  They played it at the Hi-Tone the other night and it was incredible.

Alex Chilton’s passing took everyone by surprise and was just terrible news.  But Jody Stephens, stunned and in mourning, pushed forward with John Auer, Ken Stringfellow (of The Posies and current Big Star band members) and original Big Star bassist Andy Hummel. They did the scheduled panel set up by Bob Mehr and put together a tribute to Alex with guest appearances by Chris Stamey of The dB’s, Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets, M. Ward of She & Him and acclaimed solo artist, Mike Mills of R.E.M., John Doe of X, Sondre Lerche, Chuck Prophet, Evan Dando of The Lemonheads, Amy Speace, Susan Cowsill, and The Watson Twins.

The scheduled May 15th Big Star show at The Levitt Shell (with Star & Micey opening) will still go on as a tribute to Alex. More details to come. And this Tuesday, March 30, Minglewood Hall (1555 Madison Ave) will host an informal memorial gathering for the late, great Alex Chilton. The remembrance, which was organized by Chilton’s sister Cecelia Chilton and his wife Laura Chilton, will take place from 5 to 8 PM and is open to the public.

I wanted to let those of you who might be heading to SXSW know about a panel/performance I’m moderating on the great Memphis band Big Star. The program, titled “I Never Travel Far Without a Little Big Star,” will take place on Saturday March 20 at 12:30 p.m. in room 18ABC of the Austin Convention Center.

Big Star founders Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel will be appearing AND performing some acoustic numbers as part of the event. It’ll be the first time the two have played together in over 35 years!

In addition, the panel will feature Posies and Big Star members Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, Chris Stamey of the dB’s, power-pop fave Tommy Keene and perhaps a surprise guest or two discussing the legacy of the band and the release of the critically acclaimed 2009 Rhino Records box set, Keep An Eye on the Sky.

Diane was working at Ardent back when Radio City was being written and recorded and she used to run around with Alex Chilton and the band.  She claims that “September Gurls” (about her and John Fry’s sister-in-law), “She’s A Mover” (talks about Diane in Catholic school, I believe), “O My Soul” (Diane said Alex didn’t know what a soul was but only knew soul music) and “I’m In Love With Girl” were written about her (or at least that’s what Chilton was telling her).

A little over a year ago, we were getting some things out of Diane’s storage for my brother and we came across 3 or 4 boxes of her vinyl records, which were collecting dust.  She said I could have any of the records I wanted.  I found 8 mint condition, original promo copies of #1 Record (1 was unopened) and 3 copies of Radio City, also in mint condition and original promo copies!  I immediately gave them to most of my co-workers at Ardent because they are the folks that appreciate the band most and I kept a copy of each for myself, of course.  Now I need to get Big Star’s Third on vinyl, but I definitely have all the digital tracks.

Also, Ardent engineer, producer and Big Star guru, Adam Hill, found this picture of my Uncle Buddy (Diane’s brother) with Chris Bell from the 70s.  Buddy was in a local band called Target and I believe this is from one of the mini-tours they did with Big Star back in the 70s.
